Awake and unreal, off to nowhere.

Kenojuak Ashevak:

"There is no word for art. We say it is to transfer something from the real to the unreal. I am an owl, and I am a happy owl. I like to make people happy and everything happy. I am the light of happiness and I am a dancing owl."

Kenojuak Ashevak was born into the group of Inuit known as Seekoosilarmiut, meaning “the people of the coast where there is no ice” , later moving to Cape Dorset where she lives and worked for many years.

Kenojuak is possibly the most renowned Inuit artist ever. She received every conceivable award and honour that any Canadian could acquire in the arts. Her imagery has been displayed on Canadian stamps and coins, her life portrayed in books and films, and her art sought all over the world by collectors and museums.  Her 1960 print Enchanted Owl has become an iconic image in Inuit and Canadian art.
